ROBOCOP - THE SERIES (6 DISC SET)
Reviewed on Amazon
First of all I will talk about the DVD set, then the actual programme.
The DVD set is well presented in a well built fold out digipack, with
leaflet and episode details. The Menus are animated, and some obvious
effort went into it. The special features are text screens with info
about the series behind the scenes production. The episode quality
is good, probably as good as it ever was for a TV show shot in the
early 90s.
Now the series itself. Any fan of the original film (like myself)
and even it is quite good sequel will tell you the series is not great
for one reason. It is now a family show. There is no swearing and
no hard violence. Robo does not shoot anybody... but hey, after two
years cleaning up the streets maybe he doesn't need to anymore. Robo
is a bit more teched up than he was in the films, which allows him
less violent ways to disable bad guys and solve crimes. He still blows
things up and people still get set on fire though. The show still
has plenty of that media break satire though, and some of it is still
quite adult like the films. Richard Eden is not bad as Robocop, Peter
Weller is still the man obviously. So for what it is, a very watered
down version of it's original form, it is still reasonably watchable.
Some episodes stand out more than others. Typical episodes include
Robo being framed for murder and trying to stop an OCP maniac from
taking control of the city. As you watch it you think all it would
take to be better would be some hard action/violence and it would
be really kickass. Is it better than Prime Directives? In some ways
yes, it doesn't have the violence but it is not as turgidly boring,
and Richard Eden is a million times better as Robocop than short guy
Page Fletcher, who didn't even bother watching the films to get the
robotic moves right.
Conclusion: Worth getting if you are a devote Robocop fan or have
a burning desire to see what The Series is like.
